According to Decision Data Resources, households in Mountain Brook spent about $422 million last year on consumer goods, but about $148.7 million was spent outside the city. If Mountain Brook shops could attract 1 percent of business from surrounding communities such as Hoover, Birmingham, Vestavia Hills and Homewood, they could bring in an additional $891,000 in sales tax revenue annually for the city, chamber officials said.
