3 Salons in Mountain Brook Named among America's Best!

Mtn. Brook's Blue Velvet among Elle's 100 best salons

Blue Velvet Salon at 2834 Culver Road in Mountain Brook is listed as one of the 100 Best Salons in America in the August issue of Elle magazine. It's the only Alabama salon on the list.

"We're awfully proud. It's pretty exciting," said salon manager Charles Earle. "With all the phone calls and attention that has come from it, we couldn't be happier."

A Dallas woman flying into Birmingham for a business meeting last week saw the list and called the salon for an appointment after landing. "That kind of thing is fantastic for us," Earle said.

Earle said the 13-year-old business, owned by Rachelle Perrin of Birmingham, was selected based on an extensive survey the staff completed earlier this year and the magazine's discussion with many in the beauty industry.

Named after the movie, "Blue Velvet," the salon offers haircuts, coloring, deep conditioning, permanent waves, hair extensions, body waxing, and eyebrow and eyelash tinting. Its seven stylists and support staff like to use Bumble and Bumble hair products on its female and male clients, and will even order lunch from nearby Olxea's for busy clients.

Last year, Elle magazine tapped Richard Joseph SalonSpa and Oak Street Hair Group, both of Mountain Brook, among America's 52 top salons.

Dyron's Lowcountry in Crestline gets Rave Reviews

Dyron's Lowcountry, which will specialize in the soups and seafood dishes traditional to the South Carolina and northern Georgia coasts, is scheduled to open June 2 in the former location of Table, which closed earlier this year. And according to Dyron's manager James Claborn, there's not another restaurant quite like it here.

While Lowcounty cooking is not new to Birmingham, Dyron's will be the only one in town that's "dedicated to this cuisine 100 percent," Claborn says. Indigenous to the ethnically and culturally diverse coastal areas around Charleston and Savannah, Lowcountry food has rich Caribbean and African influences and shares a culinary kinship with the Creole cooking of Louisiana.

Marketing Campaign Article in Birmingham News

If you missed the article in Sunday's Birmingham News about the new marketing campaign, view the complete article by clicking here.

According to Decision Data Resources, households in Mountain Brook spent about $422 million last year on consumer goods, but about $148.7 million was spent outside the city. If Mountain Brook shops could attract 1 percent of business from surrounding communities such as Hoover, Birmingham, Vestavia Hills and Homewood, they could bring in an additional $891,000 in sales tax revenue annually for the city, chamber officials said.
