Portrait Painting Demonstration in Oils: February 24

One of my all-time favorite artists and teachers will be in Birmingham on Wednesday, February 24th to do a painting demonstration in oil at Portraits Inc. (formerly Portrait Brokers of America).  Dawn Whitelaw is not only a terrific painter, she is a wonderful communicator about the painting process and has taught and inspired a legion of wonderful painters including Michael Shane Neal and Roger Dale Brown.

Reservations for the demonstration and the lunch to follow are required.  Space is limited so don't wait to get your name on the list.  My personal recommendation is to bring along some "opera glasses" or small binoculars so you can observe the painting and her brushwork as if you are on top of the painting yourself!  It was Dawn who taught me this trick and I've been grateful ever since!
~ Gayle Hurley, Gayle Hurley Fine Art

Here are the details:

A Mountain Brook Elementary teacher is being honored at the White House this afternoon with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science.
Melinda Storey, a teacher for 18 years in the Mountain Brook system, is one of two teachers in Alabama to receive the award, which was announced last July. Storey teaches gifted students third through sixth grades, specializing in science.
More than 100, science, math and engineering teachers around the country won the award, which is given each year to teachers or organizations who mentor students in science and engineering courses.
The teachers will receive the award, which comes with $10,000 from the National Science Foundation for use in the classroom.
Teachers are nominated for the award by colleagues, administrators or students. The winners are selected by a panel of scientists, mathematicians and educators. The other teacher in Alabama to receive the award was Haley James of Toney.
