Details: Your child will come and learn cheers, chants and dances from the MBHS Cheerleaders. They will also perform at the game that evening with the Varsity Cheerleaders between the 1st and 2nd quarter! They will receive a t-shirt, pizza, a snack and water during the clinic!

Amano of Mountain Brook Village announces a workshop and exhibit for a group of very special artists. Dorothy Ticking is a grandmother raising 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Birmingham artist, Tres Taylor and his wife Helene have been mentoring the family for 7 years. Now this family supports themselves with their own craft. Amano proudly supports this artistic venture and host the children as new artists in the gallery. To present these young artists to the community, there will be a workshop for all ages in front of the store. On Saturday, Sept. 18th, 10-4, Birmingham’s children are invited to come paint with the Tickings. They will be painting on tarpaper with house paint like their mentor Tres Taylor. Each child will paint a strand of tarpaper dolls. One doll can be taken home and the rest of the strand will be donated to The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs. There will also be a featured painting auctioned to benefit the Bell Center.

Amanos windows will be draped with the Tickings’ playful art beginning September 8th. The children’s art is filled with joyous imagery that only children can produce.

Mountain Brook returns incumbents, prepares for runoff

Mountain Brook's two incumbents fought off challenges to win re-election Tuesday, while two newcomers will face off in an Oct. 5 runoff.

Billy Pritchard in Place Three, and Jesse Vogtle in Place Five, were returned to office, with Vogtle avoiding a runoff in a three-candidate race.

In Place One, Temple Tutwiler, president of Tutwiler Properties, will face Amy Carter, a homemaker with a legal background. Tutwiler, who took 42 percent of the vote, said he was delighted with the support he received. "I'm looking forward to the race going on," he said. "It's been a great experience."

Carter received 36 percent of the vote, while former city attorney Frank Galloway received 22 percent. Attempts to reach Carter for comment were unsuccessful.

Vogtle, who was elected to the council in 2006, won Place Five with 52 percent of the vote, to 46 percent for architect Rick Sprague. Mark Roberts, owner of commodities brokerage PalladiumTrading.com, garnered a little less than 2 percent. Vogtle said he was pleased to be returning to the council. "It was a hard-fought battle, and I appreciate Rick's taking the high road on everything," Vogtle said. "I feel like the people had all the facts before them and made a choice. I'm happy the people voted me back into office because I enjoy serving the people and everything that goes with being a city councilman. It's been an interesting month."

In Place Three, Pritchard won with 52 percent of the vote, compared to 48 percent for homemaker Cornelia LaRussa. Pritchard, who has served on the council since 2000, said he expected a close race and this was the toughest of the three he has faced. "I think it was a great day for the future of the city of Mountain Brook," Pritchard said.

Council members in Mountain Brook represent at-large districts. In 2004 the city began staggering its council terms to avoid having all seats open in one election. The previous two elections featured only one contested race each time, which made this year's field of eight candidates for three seats unusual.

City officials said turnout was also slightly higher than in 2008. Bill Irons, a poll inspector, said voting throughout the day at St. Luke's Episcopal Church was "spirited."

A group of 16 Mountain Brook High School juniors and seniors are learning the basics of leadership this school year.The group participated in a scavanger hunt around Crestline Village in Mountain Brook, Al.,Thur., Aug. 19, 2010. The beginning of "Leadership Mountain Brook" coincided with the first day of school, as the 11th and 12th graders taking part went through an orientation session at the city's board of education office. By week's end, the group had participated in a scavenger hunt around Crestline Village and served as judges at Dawg Daze.

Margaret Clark, the high school's cooperative education counselor, said "Leadership" will provide the students with an in-depth look at how the city operates on a day-to-day basis. In the process, the students will learn how professionals in the public and private sectors use certain talents and job skills, such as proficiency with technology or interpersonal relations.

While the daily operations of a city may not seem like attention-grabbing stuff for a group of teenagers, the program will also involve students in building teams for tasks, such as helping to promote events for the city and its business community. Over the school year, the students also will work with individual city departments on certain projects. Participants will not only examine large issues, such as how the city's yearly budget comes together, but also smaller ones, such as how the Emmet O'Neal Library each day processes incoming and outgoing books.

What organizers hope is that students will bring fresh perspectives to how the city functions, and learn a little about themselves. "We'd like to see them come up with their own projects," Clark said. "They'll have a chance to see what it takes to improve the city, and hopefully develop their own leadership styles." Students were recommended for the program and had to write an essay on leadership to be chosen. To take part, students will have to leave campus to participate in the program, for which they will receive classroom credit.

For the first day, students got talks from Mountain Brook Mayor Terry Oden and Superintendent Dicky Barlow. "I hope you go into it with all the gusto you've got," Barlow told them. "You'll find that you learn a lot by asking questions, and listening."

Mountain Brook High School Principal Vic Wilson said part of the challenge in preparing students to become leaders is the often rapid changes wrought by technology. "We're preparing them for jobs that don't even exist now," he said. "While you can't prepare for everything, what is not going to change is the importance of relationships."

Tara Creeden, a junior, said she was recommended for the group by a teacher.
"I love it," she said. "It's a great opportunity. Even though we're learning specifically about how the city operates, the same principles can be applied to any everyday leadership position"

MBHS has a LIMITED number of Reserved Parking Spaces in the main parking lot left for sale for this fall's home games. Reserved parking spaces are 150.00 for the year and the few that remain will be sold first come, first served. Contact Doug Centeno at dcenteno@bcattys.com if interested.

A LIMITED number of Reserved Seating is also available for home games. The reserved section is on the 50 yard line directly in front of the press box. Each reserved seat includes a stadium chair that will be waiting for you at kickoff and is put away after for you the game. The reserved seats that remain are 75.00 for the entire year for the first seat and 50.00 for each additional seat on the same order. Again, these are first come, first served. Mountain Brook library's garden grows, thanks to summer readers

Mountain Brook's Emmet O'Neal Library this year watched its summer reading program grow -- literally -- before the city's eyes.

Readers, from preschool to teenagers, participated in the library's inaugural garden, which took shape across the street from the library. The garden was a joint venture between the library and the Oak Street Garden Shop and coincided with the summer reading program.

Children's Librarian Carol Melton said 2,150 children signed up for the summer reading program. Though there is no tally for how many readers and would-be farmers participated in the garden, groups of children took part in helping water and cultivate the crops of squash, beans, tomatoes and zucchini.
"We had groups that worked on Tuesday and Saturday mornings before story time," Melton said. "The teens worked on Friday. We had some who loved going to work over there after chess club on Wednesdays."

Each summer, the library sponsors a reading program to encourage children to continue reading while out of school. Oak Street Garden Shop first proposed the idea of a garden for the library's young readers earlier this year, library officials said. The garden shop provided seeds, tools, some labor and instruction, and helped maintain the 1,000-foot plot of land.

A picket fence was also added to make the garden aesthetically pleasing to those passing through Crestline Village. Leftover produce is being donated to Magic City Harvest, a Birmingham nonprofit organization that distributes food to the needy.

"We've had so many positive comments from patrons," Melton said. "Anytime, you're liable to see someone out there browsing through it, even if they're just out walking in the neighborhood."
The garden shop will continue to maintain the garden through the fall. Melton said the library is looking into organizing a Halloween-themed event which might involve a pumpkin patch.

FOOTBALL - Boys grade 2-6. All tackle players must appear at registration for weigh-in. There will be five leagues, 2nd-flag, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade tackle. There will be a clinic for all players registered in grades 3-6. More information on the clinic will be available at registration. Team selections for grades 3-6 will be done at the end of the clinic. Players will be notified as to team assignment by their coach. Flag Football will begin in early September. Flag FB and 3rd - 6th grade leagues will run through the end of October. Fee is $130. 2nd Grade Flag fee is $85.

FALL BASEBALL - Boys grade 1-6. Practices and/or games will be held twice a week. Games will be played primarily on Sunday afternoons. Practices are usually on Tue. or Thu. Grades 1-2 will be machine pitch and grades 3-4 & 5-6 will be player pitch. Fee is $110.

VOLLEYBALL - Girls grade 5&6. Practices and games will be held 2-3 times per week at MBHS. The season will begin the end of Aug./1st of Sept. Fee is $100.

TEAM TENNIS - Boys & Girls grade 4-6. Season starts the end of Aug./1st of Sept. and will run until mid-late Oct. Schedule will consist on average of one practice and one match each week. Fee is $80.

FALL SOFTBALL - Girls grade 1-7. Practices & games will be mostly held on Sun.'s & Mon.'s with some other possible weekday events. Games will most likely be played with other communities. Grades 1-2 (coach pitch) and grades 3-4 & 5-7 (player pitch). Fee is $90.

32 Degrees, A Yogurt Bar, opened its second location in Crestline Village the second week of August in Crestline Village behind Piggly Wiggly and adjacent to Zoe's. The topping bar, with over FIFTY options, is truly unique. It will feature fresh, seasonal and exotic fruits, premium candies and other sauces and delicious choices. Customers will be able to choose from a variety of flavors of frozen yogurts to include non-fat, low-fat and reduced fat varieties. Both the Crestline and the Summit location have abundant seating inside and out. It's a fantastic place to get an afternoon treat, to take the kids after school, or when you just want to enjoy a healthy alternative to ice cream or other sweets. Because it is self serve, you can decide how much or how little yogurt you want to enjoy!

The grand opening, August 15th from 1-4pm, will be a fundraiser for Emmet O'Neal Library. All money raised from this event will be donated directly to the Library. Donations are $3.00 for kids 12 and under, $5.00 for adults.

Dr. Georgia Jones of Crestline Village Dentistry knows about kids and dentists ~ a young mother, she has small children of her own! So, it was a challenge to her to build her new practice around family appeal, and she wanted to create a non-threatening atmosphere for that very first visit! Headphones and lots of favorite movies has helped! Cartoons for the kids (and "Friends" for the adults) keeps the laughter going while the equipment is buzzing.

It is considered a home concept store. Yves Delorme has opened one in Santa Barbara, Dallas, and Washington. They own these stores. Mine will be the first in the country, privately owned. The BIG stores are in Paris, St. Petersburg, and Dubai. The exciting part for me is that it is French designed, and made in Europe. While we won't have everything in the beginning that I would like to have (and couldn't possibly because of space limitations), we will continue to get shipments from France through the fall. This store will have a French contemporary touch to it as well.

A group of local businesses are looking for a company to makeover.

Business Makeover Birmingham is accepting applications for its annual makeover project, which will offer up to $30,000 of free professional services to the winning company, said a news release.

Last year’s winner, Dreamland Holding Co., owner of Dreamland Bar-B-Q restaurants and products, opened its books and business to the group and emerged from the six-month makeover with a new vision and strategic plan.

Applications will be accepted on the project’s website HERE through July 15. The winner will be chosen from five finalists and announced in August.

Consideration will be given to business-to-business companies with annual revenues of at least $1 million and those that are locally owned with three years in business and 10 or more employees.

CONGRATS to Mountain Brook's outstanding City Manager, Sam Gaston, selected as President-Elect of ICMA

Today, Mountain Brook's City Manager Sam Gaston, was selected as President-Elect of ICMA (International City/County Management Association), the premier local government leadership and management organization. Its mission is to create excellence in local governance by advocating and developing the professional management of local government worldwide. In addition to supporting its nearly 9,000 members, ICMA provides publications, data, information, technical assistance, and training and professional development to thousands of city, town, and county experts and other individuals throughout the world.

Sam Gaston has served as City Manager of Mountain Brook for 17 years, after having received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Auburn in Public Administration. He is a member of Homewood/Mountain Brook Kiwanis Club and served as President, 2000-2001. He's a member of Alabama City-County Management Association and served as President, 1989-90 and 2001-2002. And he's been an adjunct professor in the UAB MPA program since 2000 where he teaches the Urban Administration or State and Local Government classes.

ICMA is the premier organization of professional local government leaders building sustainable communities to improve lives worldwide. Our community is extremely proud of his election to a leadership role in such an outstanding organization.

For those athletes who have wanted to try a triathlon - or those who don't miss a chance to compete in one - we encourage you to sign-up for the first annual Sterne Agee LJCC Triathlon we're hosting Memorial Day Monday, May 31st.

The event will be considered a "mini tri" and it's ideal for those of all ages as well as athletic skill levels. Entrants will swim 200 yards in our outdoor pool, cycle either five miles off-road on the trails behind the Center or eight-miles on the streets in this area, and end with a two-mile run. Individuals can enter or you can sign up to be on a team.
